Archbishop Issues Statement on Promotion of Archbishop O’Brien

WASHINGTON, D.C. – His Excellency, the Most Reverend Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio, J.C.D., Archbishop for the Military Services (AMS), USA today issued the following statement on the Vatican’s appointment of his AMS predecessor, Baltimore Archbishop Edwin F. O’Brien, as Pro-Grand Master of the Equestrian Order (Knights) of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem, based in Rome.

Archbishop Broglio said:

“The news of Archbishop O’Brien’s promotion to the role of Pro-Grand Master of the Order of the Holy Sepulcher can only be greeted with joy. His outstanding leadership qualities and professional preparation will be of immense benefit to the Order. His return to the Eternal City will also benefit the North American College and the other institutions there.

“Of course, his departure from the Baltimore-Washington area will create a void. He had just taken over the role as the Grand Prior of the Mid-Atlantic Lieutenancy of the Order.

“All of those he served so well as the third Archbishop for the Military Services join me in thanking him for his ministry and assuring him of our prayers for his new mission.”

Archbishop O’Brien was Archbishop for the Military Services, USA from 1997 to 2007. He was installed as Archbishop of Baltimore on October 1, 2007.

As the nation’s only archdiocese without geographical boundaries, the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA endorses priests for on-site ministry at hundreds of locations throughout the country and around the world to Catholics and their families in the U.S. armed forces, VA Medical Centers and overseas civilian posts. Worldwide, an estimated 1.5 million Catholics depend on these priests to serve their spiritual and sacramental needs.
