Served as Archbishop for the Military Services from 1991-1997
WASHINGTON, D.C.—His Excellency, the Most Reverend Joseph Thomas Dimino, retired Archbishop for the Military Services, USA, was born to eternal life on Tuesday night, Nov. 25, 2014. Archbishop Dimino passed away in peace surrounded by friends and brothers and sisters in Christ, including Jo Ann Redmond, AMS Director of Administration and Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio, at a retirement home run by the Little Sisters of the Poor in Washington, D.C., where he has lived for the past few years. He was 91.
Archbishop Dimino was born in New York on Jan. 7, 1923. After attending Cathedral College, Archbishop Dimino entered St. Joseph’s Seminary, Dunwoodie, and was ordained a priest on June 4, 1949 for the Archdiocese of New York. After his ordination, Father Dimino served in various pastoral assignments throughout New York.
In 1953, Father Dimino was commissioned a U.S. Navy Chaplain and served the pastoral needs of American service members and their families for nearly 25 years. In 1977, Chaplain Dimino retired from the Navy with the rank of Captain and was assigned to serve as the chancellor of the Military Vicariate.
In 1983, Pope John Paul II appointed then Monsignor Dimino an auxiliary bishop to Archbishop John Thomas Ryan of the Military Vicariate. When Archbishop Ryan retired in 1991, Bishop Dimino was elevated to serve as the second Archbishop for the Military Services, USA, until his retirement in 1997.
