The Archdiocese partners with two universities to provide catechist formation for certification: 1) University of Dayton’s Virtual Learning Community for Faith Formation(VLCFF) 2) Catholic Distance University (CDU). This article will focus on the seminars and courses provided by Catholic Distance University.
CDU is an all online university. The headquarters recently moved from Northern Virginia to Charlestown, WV.
Sister Mary Margaret Ann Schlather, SDN, Dean of Catechetical Programs at Catholic Distance University, visited with Dr. Mark Moitoza (AMS Director of Evangelization) and José Amaya (Director of Faith Formation) on April 19, 2016 at the AMS Edwin Cardinal O’Brien Pastoral Center. We met to talk about the AMS-CDU Partnership to form catechists for certification and the faith formation of adults. CDU changed its delivery platform to Canvas to provide a more intuitive and engaging environment for participants. In addition, CDU is now offering the OSV-CDU MA Degree in Theology for Catholic Educators. Coordinators of Religious Education may be interested in pursuing this Masters.
The partnership provides faith formation seminars and courses for catechist certification and adult faith formation at a discounted fee of $30. All the seminars and courses marked at $165 qualify for the AMS subsidy registration fee. You must use promo codeCDU15MILITARY to redeem the $30 rate. Make sure to press “apply” upon entering the promo code on the registration form.
CDU is currently offering about 40 seminars and independent study courses a year. The seminars are 3 weeks long, with facilitator and learning discussion. Participants have an extra week to complete a final reflection paper. See the seminar list available on CDU’s site. Independent study courses range from 3 to 6 weeks (self paced during the term of the course). Adults may sign up for independent study courses at any time during the year. Check out CDU for catechist certification and adult faith formation especially for parents. Type the key word of one of the 14 standards in the search engine to discern which seminars and courses will fit your needs as a catechist or parent.
The AMS requires catechists to take two seminars or one independent study course to apply for AMS Basic Catechist Certification through CDU. The courses and seminars are excellent for adult faith formation. Encourage parents in the religious education program to deepen their knowledge and understanding of the faith by taking courses and seminars.
As you browse through CDU’s catalogue, what other courses or seminars would you recommend creating to meet the needs of military catechists and parents?
