Archbishop Timothy Broglio has distributed $118,380.03 in hurricane relief funds to the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, the Diocese of St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands, and the Episcopal Conference of Puerto Rico.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Catholics in the United States Military over the past few months have donated a total of $118,380.03 in relief to victims of Hurricanes HarveyIrma, and Maria. Catholic military chaplains, serving with endorsement and faculties from the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS), took up the donations at military installations worldwide, in general by means of a designated offering at the Sunday Mass.

According to reports, the three 2017 hurricanes killed hundreds of people and caused more than $200 billion in damage. The designated offerings from U.S. Military Catholics came in response to three appeals made by His Excellency, the Most Reverend Timothy P. Broglio, J.C.D., Archbishop for the Military Services. Archbishop Broglio gave thanks for the generous response of Catholics who serve.

Archbishop Broglio said:  “The response has been very generous.  The monetary offerings are a part of the assistance rendered by the military.  Others, including priests, went to the areas and rebuilt damages structures, repaired power grids, and offered moral support to the afflicted and those helping them.  It is an inspiration to see the response of those to whom I am privileged to minister.”

Archbishop Broglio has distributed the hurricane relief funds to the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, the Diocese of St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands, and the Episcopal Conference of Puerto Rico, which represents the commonwealth’s six dioceses: AreciboCaguasFajardo-HumacaoMayagüezPonce, and San Juan.
