“The word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time: ‘Set out for the great city of Nineveh, and announce to it the message that I will tell you.’" (Jon 3:1-2)
Jonah was a prophet. He is most famous for running away from God’s calling and then ending up in the belly of a whale. But today we hear of the Lord’s second attempt with Jonah. This time, Jonah follows the Lord’s command and tells the city of Nineveh to repent. The result was the conversion of a whole city, king and all, and in response, the Lord relented from His punishments. This is what a prophet does: he speaks the divine truth into people’s lives, because the Lord has asked him to do so. At baptism we were all baptized into the roles of priest, prophet and king. Yes, each of has a responsibility to be a prophet to those around us. Today, become who you are, a prophet of God, and deliver divine truth to someone who needs to hear it.
