U.S. Military Families Receive AMS Scholarships to Attend World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia

Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio to celebrate 4:00 p.m. Mass on Friday, Sept. 25, in the Upper Church of St. John the Evangelist at 21 South 13th Street

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Through the generosity of donors, the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS), has awarded scholarships to ten (10) U.S. Military families for the purpose of defraying registration costs for the upcoming World Meeting of FamiliesCongress and Papal Visit next week in Philadelphia, Pa. The AMS received the donations last December when Dr. Mark Moitoza, AMS Vice-Chancellor for Evangelization, and Ms. Casey Bustamante, AMS Young Adult Coordinator, were guests on Gus Lloyd’s Seize the Day morning radio show on Sirius XM’s The Catholic Channel. During the hour-long program, listeners called in to share stories about a parent, child, or relative who had served in the military. Listeners made donations to honor the service of a family member and to thank families now serving.

The scholarship recipients completed an application and submitted a recommendation from the priest at their particular military installation. The families selected represent the various branches of military service. They will travel to Philadelphia from Schofield Barracks, Hawaii; Camp Pendleton, California; Fort Riley, Kansas; Barksdale Air Force Base (AFB) Louisiana; Fort Gordon, Georgia; Tyndall AFB, Florida; Fort Belvoir, Virginia; Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, Washington, D.C.; the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y.; and Ramstein Air Base, Germany.

The families will participate in the keynotes, workshops, exhibits, and the youth congress at the World Meeting of Families Congress being held throughout the week at the Philadelphia Convention Center. As registered participants, they will all receive passes to two gatherings with the Holy Father at the Benjamin Franklin Parkway: the Family Festival of Faith on Saturday evening, Sept. 26, and the Papal Mass on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 27.

His Excellency, the Most Reverend Timothy P. Broglio, J.C.D., Archbishop for the Military Services, will celebrate a Mass for military families on Friday, Sept. 25, at 4:00 p.m. (ET) in the Upper Church of Saint John the Evangelist, 21 South 13th Street, just a few blocks from the Philadelphia Convention Center. The Mass will be an opportunity for members of the military and their families and others to pray for military families serving around the world. More information is available here.
