Support Free Exercise of Faith in U.S. Military Through Triennial National Collection and AMS Appeal

WASHINGTON, D.C. – American Catholics will have a rare opportunity early next month to offer charitable support for pastoral care to the faithful in the United States Military and the nation’s Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Centers. A special second collection will be taken up in parishes nationwide for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS). This special collection for the AMS is taken only once every three years with the approval of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). Most parishes will take up the Triennial National Collection at Sunday Masses the weekend of Nov. 9-10, or as otherwise determined by an individual diocese or parish. Military Catholics who attend Mass at nondenominational base chapels where no second collections are taken may nevertheless give the same weekend through the AMS Appeal. Continue reading

One-Hundred-Year-Old World War II Veteran Among Those to be Remembered at May 20 Memorial Mass

WASHINGTON, DC – Wednesday marked the 100th birthday of Mr. Fouad Simon John of Uniontown, PA, a Maronite Catholic who served as a U.S. Army medic in World War II from 1941 to 1945, and he is still around to celebrate with his family. It is precisely for Mr. John and all others who have served our nation in uniform, living and deceased, that the 24th annual Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Pentecost Sunday, May 20, in the Great Upper Church of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, 400 Michigan Avenue Northeast in Washington, D.C. Final Tally: U.S. Military Catholics Donate $118,380 to Hurricane Relief

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Catholics in the United States Military over the past few months have donated a total of $118,380.03 in relief to victims of Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria. Catholic military chaplains, serving with endorsement and faculties from the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS), took up the donations at military installations worldwide, in general by means of a designated offering at the Sunday Mass. Auxiliary Bishop Richard B. Higgins Celebrates 50 Years as a Catholic Priest

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today, the Most Rev. Richard B. Higgins celebrates the golden anniversary of his priestly ordination. Auxiliary Bishop Higgins, 74, was ordained a priest on March 9, 1968, in the Basilica of St. John Lateran in Rome. He currently serves His Excellency, the Most Reverend Timothy P. Broglio, J.C.D., Archbishop for the Military Services, USA, as Episcopal Vicar for Veterans Affairs. In that role, Bishop Higgins is responsible for more than 210 Catholic chaplains in 153 VA Medical Centers throughout the United States, Puerto Rico and Guam. Bishop Higgins also serves as the Bishop Protector for the eight-thousand members of the Catholic War Veterans of America and currently assists Archbishop Broglio in serving the installations in the Eastern Vicariate of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS).
