Catholic Chaplain at Fort Bragg Nominated for Lumen Christi Award

WASHINGTON, DC – Father Lukasz Willenberg, CH (CAPT), USA, a U.S. Army chaplain currently serving at Fort Bragg, NC, has been nominated for a 2018-19 Lumen Christi Award from Catholic Extension. Now in its 41st year, the Lumen Christi (Latin for “Light of Christ”) annually honors an individual or group working in one of America’s mission dioceses who demonstrates how the power of faith can transform lives and communities.

Film on Vietnam War Hero Father Vincent R. Capodanno Named Winner of 2018 Gabriel Award

WASHINGTON, DC – The film Called and Chosen – Father Vincent R. Capodanno has been named winner of a 2018 Gabriel Award from the Catholic Press Association. The 90-minute film, which premiered on EWTN August 30, 2017, explores the life of the Maryknoll missionary-turned-military-chaplain who died a hero in combat during the Vietnam War. Father Capodanno was killed by enemy gunfire on Sept. 4, 1967, at the age of 38 in Vietnam’s Quế Sơn Valley, administering the sacraments to embattled U.S. Marines and pulling the wounded to safety. He posthumously received the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military decoration.  His Cause of Canonization has been opened by the Catholic Church.

Memorial Mass Draws 2,250 Faithful to the National Shrine

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Approximately 2,250 Catholics gathered in the Great Upper Church of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception on Pentecost Sunday for a 4:30 p.m. (EDST) Mass to honor the men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces, particularly those who paid the ultimate price for American liberty.The 24th Annual Memorial Mass of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS), which was attended by service members from all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces, opened with a posting of the colors and the singing of the National Anthem.

One-Hundred-Year-Old World War II Veteran Among Those to be Remembered at May 20 Memorial Mass

WASHINGTON, DC – Wednesday marked the 100th birthday of Mr. Fouad Simon John of Uniontown, PA, a Maronite Catholic who served as a U.S. Army medic in World War II from 1941 to 1945, and he is still around to celebrate with his family. It is precisely for Mr. John and all others who have served our nation in uniform, living and deceased, that the 24th annual Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Pentecost Sunday, May 20, in the Great Upper Church of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, 400 Michigan Avenue Northeast in Washington, D.C. The Memorial Mass begins at 4:30 p.m. (EDST) and is open to the public.

Texas Women’s Project Donates $80,000 to Co-Sponsored Seminarian Program

HOUSTON, Texas – For the past two years, under the banner of the Texas Women’s Project, wives of the Texas State Council of the Knights of Columbus(K of C) have been raising money to support Catholic seminarians in formation to become priests and U.S. Military chaplains. His Excellency, the Most Reverend Timothy P. Broglio, J.C.D., Archbishop for the Military Services, USA, accepted a check for $75,000 Saturday night at the council’s 114th Annual State Convention banquet in Houston. Presenting the check was Ms. Jo-Dee Benson, wife of Knights of Columbus Texas State Deputy Douglas E. Oldmixon. Meanwhile, the Texas wives raised an additional $5,000 over the weekend, bringing their total contribution to $80,000.
