Archbishop Broglio Celebrates U.S. Bishops’ Consecration of USA to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus

Consecration celebrated in anticipation of Nation’s 250th Birthday

Archbishop Timothy Broglio preaches homily on Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus in Washington,DC, on June 12, 2026.

WASHINGTON, DC — On Friday, June 12, His Excellency, the Most Reverend Timothy P. Broglio, J.C.D., Archbishop for the Military Services, USA, led the faithful gathered in the crypt church of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in same prayer with which the U.S. Bishops consecrated the United States to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus on Thursday in Orlando, FL.  This act on the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus was another moment of prayer in anticipation of the Nation’s 250th birthday.

In his homily, Archbishop Broglio preached in part:

“Divine love is never isolated in a relationship between God and me.  That love always opens us to others.  That dimension of our celebration is particularly important, because our Nation has been blessed.  There are many opportunities.  Much has been shared in the decades after the Second World War when Europe was rebuilt, Japan was stabilized, and US foreign aid made an important difference in developing Nations.

“We take pride in those accomplishments, but we still have the poor with us—as the Lord promised.  Catholic Charities continues to respond to the needs of those who suffer hunger, thirst, and homelessness. Catholic Relief Services expresses that same divine love in concrete ways beyond our borders.  It is almost as if the beating Heart of Christ pumps resources into those who have been cut off from other sources of support.  He reminds us, just as He did the Chosen People, that election brings with it responsibility.  God linked Himself with the Chosen People and He calls us to promote His divine assistance to those who most need to discover His care for us.

“If we look back with pride on the forward progress of a people formed by immigrants and recognizing the God-given inalienable rights, we must also acknowledge the failures, the stumbles, and the missed opportunities.  That recognition really allows authentic celebration and the renewal that comes from a landmark anniversary.  It reminds us that, as in every relationship, we. have room to grow and develop….

“As we consecrate the Nation to the Sacred Heart, let us also consecrate ourselves and recommit ourselves to a participation in this unique burning heart of love for God and for humanity.”
