Archbishop Timothy Broglio to Celebrate Chrism Mass TONIGHT

Will bless oils for sacramental use over the coming year at U.S. Military installations and VA Medical Centers

The urns in which the sacred oils will be blessed at the Chrism Mass for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA, in Washington, DC, on March 24, 2026.

WASHINGTON, DC – His Excellency, the Most Reverend Timothy P. Broglio, J.C.D., Archbishop for the Military Services, USA, will celebrate the annual Chrism Mass TONIGHT–March 24, 2026–at 6 p.m. (ET) in the Crypt Church of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, 400 Michigan Avenue, Northeast, in Washington, DC.

The purpose of the Chrism Mass is to bless oils for sacramental use over the coming year at U.S. Military installations around the world and VA Medical Centers nationwide. The Archbishop will consecrate the Chrism for the sacraments of baptism, confirmation, and priestly and episcopal ordination; the Oil of Catechumens for the Rite of Initiation for new Catholics; and the Oil of the Sick for the anointing of the sick.

Auxiliary Bishops F. Richard SpencerNeal J. BuckonJoseph L. CoffeyGregg M. Caggianelli , Richard B. Higgins (Ret.), and Paul S. Loverde, Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of Arlington, will concelebrate. Also concelebrating will be Monsignor Anthony R. Frontiero, S.T.D., Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia; Father Mark Rutherford, J.C.L., J.C.D. (Cand.), Judicial Vicar; Catholic U.S. Military chaplains, active and retired; and other priests in service to the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS).

During the Mass, the priests will renew their priestly commitments.

The Chrism Mass is open to the public. Attire is service dress for military personnel and business for civilians. The Basilica is disabled accessible. The media are welcome to cover the Mass.
