WASHINGTON, DC — On Sunday, Oct. 7, 2018, “Team AMS” will run in the Army Ten-Miler in support of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS). The Army Ten-Miler is an annual autumn footrace through the streets of the nation’s capital. Thousands of runners from across the United States and overseas will participate.
Team AMS comprises 54 runners, including 28 military members, six military family members, nine civilians, three chaplains, three seminarians, three AMS employees, and two priests. Through gifts from sponsors, they hope to raise $60,000 in support of the AMS mission to provide pastoral care for Catholics in the U.S. armed forces and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical centers.
In an email to AMS supporters, His Excellency, the Most Reverend Timothy P. Broglio, J.C.D., Archbishop for the Military Services, noted that “[e]ach member runs for various reasons, all of which unite in one cause – sustaining the Archdiocese that supports members of the military and their families. Each runner wants to ensure that from all the sacrifices our service members and their families must make, their religion is not one!”
The Archbishop is asking those who can to give in support of Team AMS’s fundraising goal. Archbishop Broglio observed that “[y]our gift regardless of size, when combined with the fundraising efforts of Team AMS can be multiplied to ensure the goal is achieved. The Gospel of Matthew reminds us how our Lord multiplies what may seem little in the multiplication of the five loaves of bread and two fishes. A small gift, when placed in the hands of the Lord with faith and love, will multiply to provide what is needed.”
In the same email, His Excellency expressed gratitude for all donations, and requested “fervent prayers” for Team AMS members as they prepare for the Army Ten-Miler.
