WASHINGTON, DC – Pope Leo XIV has accepted the resignation of the Most Reverend F. Richard Spencer, 75, from the Office of Auxiliary Bishop for the Military Services, USA. The resignation was announced in Washington, D.C. on June 10, 2026, by Archbishop Gabriele Caccia, apostolic nuncio to the United States. Bishop Spencer served as Episcopal Vicar to His Excellency, the Most Rev. Timothy P. Broglio, J.C.D., Archbishop for the Military Services, since 2010.
Archbishop Broglio commented: “On behalf of all of the faithful and clergy of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA, and in my own name, I express profound gratitude to Bishop F. Richard Spencer for his years of service to this archdiocese. First he was a dedicated and faithful chaplain in the US Army and then continued that ministry as an Auxiliary Bishop extending my ministry throughout the Europe-Asia Vicariate and for the last seven years as my Episcopal Vicar for the Eastern Vicariate of the United States.
“He has been tireless in responding to the call and almost omnipresent in the areas of his responsibility. No one could have asked for a more faithful, willing collaborator. While he continues to support the AMS by his prayers and an occasional ministerial activity, I hope that he will enjoy some well-deserved rest and relaxation.”
