SALUTE Magazine Honored with Five First-Place Awards at Catholic Media Conference

Quarterly hard-copy magazine and other archdiocesan publications receive total of eleven citations for journalistic excellence

The Fall 2021 edition of SALUTE Magazine won first place for Best Cover in the 2022 Catholic Media Awards presented on June 7, 2022, in Portland, OR.

PORTLAND, OR – The Catholic Media Association saluted SALUTE Magazine with five first-place awards on Thursday night, June 7, 2022, at the organization’s annual Catholic Media Conference in Portland, OR. SALUTE is the quarterly news magazine of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS). Edited by Ms. Jo Ann Redmond under the direction of Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio, J.C.D., SALUTE has a circulation of approximately 50,000 worldwide.

A photo of Father Daniel Swartz, CHC, LT, USN, commending the remains of 13 U.S. servicemen and women killed in the Aug. 26, 2021 suicide bombing at the international airport in Kabul, Afghanistan, swept first place in the magazine categories of Best Photograph – National/International Event; Best Photograph – General News; and Best Photograph – Spot News. The Fall 2021 cover, on which the photograph appeared, claimed first-place honors for Best Cover. An advertisement for the Catholic War Veterans and Auxiliary appearing in the same edition received a first-place citation in the category of Best Ad Copywriting.

SALUTE was also honored with a second-place award in the category of Best Magazine Cover for the Summer 2021 edition.  An article by First Lieutenant Tomás Aguilar, USMC, on “Tips for a Young Military Catholic Longing for Community,” published in the Fall 2021 edition, received a third-place certificate for Best Essay in the mission magazine category. The entire Easter 2021 edition was recognized with a third-place citation in the magazine category of Best Seasonal Issue. Ms. Redmond received an honorable mention in the all-member category of Editor of the Year (English).

Additionally, the AMS’s monthly electronic newsletter, e-TTENTION, received third-place honors in the category of Best External E-Newsletter for the September 2021 edition. An episode of  the archdiocese’s podcast, Catholic Military Life, featuring an interview with Father Richard Erikson, Ch, Brig Gen, USAF (Ret.), on a song he co-wrote about military chaplains called “Born to Bless the Fallen,” took an honorable mention for Best Podcast Program.

The Catholic Media Association represents 240 publications and more than 90 communications offices throughout the United States and Canada. This year’s contest winners were chosen among approximately 2,700 submissions in various categories.
