Funeral Arrangements Published for Father Martin Smith-Soucier, President of National Conference of VA Catholic Chaplains

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Father Martin Smith-Soucier, Chief Chaplain at Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center of Cincinnati, Ohio, and President of the National Conference of Veterans Affairs Catholic Chaplains (NCVACC), died June 19th at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati with his family and dear friends at his side. He was 69 years old. Father Smith-Soucier served as a priest for over 40 years.

Deadline Looms for Corporate Sponsors to Pledge Support for Team AMS in Army Ten-Miler

WASHINGTON, D.C. – At 72, retired U.S. Navy Lieutenant John Odell runs three days a week, five to six miles at a stretch. “My doctor told me that running was better than any pill he could prescribe, so I figured running’s doing good for me,” the veteran naval cryptologic maintenance officer quipped. On Oct. 8, Mr. Odell, of Penrose, N.C., will run through the streets of the nation’s capital in the U.S. Army’s 33rd annual Army Ten-Miler. He will be on a charity team running to raise money for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS).

Archbishop Timothy Broglio Issues Statement on Ship Collision Involving USS Fitzgerald

“Deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life on the USS Fitzgerald, I ask all of the faithful to remember in prayer the victims and their families.  My heart also goes out to all of the members of the crew who not only lost their esteemed shipmates, but also all of the personal belongings they had on board with them.  The Naval community at Yokosuka has responded with great care in attempting to meet the physical, psychological, and spiritual needs of those who survived the collision.  May Almighty God give them continued fortitude in the days ahead.

Prospective New Navy Chaplain Ordained a Priest

LAFAYETTE, LA. – The Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS), is celebrating the priestly ordination of a prospective U.S. Navy chaplain this past weekend.  Father Rene Pellessier, 27, was ordained a priest on Saturday, June 10, in Lafayette, La. Father Pellessier hopes eventually to serve on active duty in the U.S. Navy with endorsement and faculties from the AMS.

Prospective Catholic U.S. Military Chaplain Ordained Transitional Deacon in Atlanta

ATLANTA, GA. – The Reverend Mr. Michael Metz, a candidate for the Catholic priesthood and United States military chaplaincy, was ordained a transitional deacon Saturday, May 27, in Atlanta, Ga. Deacon Metz is on track to be ordained a priest in June of 2018, and he hopes eventually to serve as a Catholic chaplain in the United States Army with endorsement and faculties from the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS).

Warriors to Lourdes Complete Pilgrimage

WASHINGTON, D.C. – A group of 200 pilgrims largely composed of U.S. Military personnel, including the wounded, ill, and injured, along with their companions and caretakers, left France on Tuesday following a week-long “journey of healing” to the Marian grotto and bath springs in Lourdes during the 59th annual Pèlerinage Militaire International (PMI)—or “International Military Pilgrimage.”

The Archdiocese is counting on Team AMS to raise $60,000 in charitable donations to support vocations, evangelization, and other religious programs for Catholic families in the United States Military, veterans hospitalized in the nation’s VA Medical Centers, and civilians working for the federal government beyond U.S. borders.
