SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA – More than 50 Catholic priests in service to the Military will gather in San Diego next week for the first of four biennial convocations to be held across the nation and in Rome over the next two months under the direction of His Excellency, the Most Reverend Timothy P. Broglio, J.C.D., Archbishop for the Military Services.
CZĘSTOCHOWA, POLAND – Auxiliary Bishop F. Richard Spencer joined soldiers and military officers from the United States and five other nations in a “Walk for Peace” across parts of Poland. They walked as participants in Poland’s traditional August pilgrimage to the revered Black Madonna, a sacred icon preserved at the historic shrine to Our Lady of Częstochowa, the Queen of Peace. WASHINGTON, D.C.—This September marks the 50th anniversary of the death on a Vietnam battlefield of Father Vincent R. Capodanno, M.M., Servant of God. Two major events will commemorate the occasion.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Sunday off the east coast of Australia, just hours after a U.S. Marine MV-22 Osprey launched from the USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) and crashed in the Coral Sea, killing three Marines, Father David J. Hammond, CHC, LT, USN, was in the ship’s Star of the Sea Chapel, offering Mass for the victims, the survivors, and their families. Such is the role of a Catholic U.S. Militarychaplain: to bring timely pastoral care, the presence of Christ in the sacraments, sympathy, and encouragement to those who serve, particularly during times of crisis and tragedy.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – At 72, retired U.S. Navy Lieutenant John Odell runs three days a week, five to six miles at a stretch. “My doctor told me that running was better than any pill he could prescribe, so I figured running’s doing good for me,” the veteran naval cryptologic maintenance officer quipped. On Oct. 8, Mr. Odell, of Penrose, N.C., will run through the streets of the nation’s capital in the U.S. Army’s 33rd annual Army Ten-Miler. He will be on a charity team running to raise money for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS).
“Deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life on the USS Fitzgerald, I ask all of the faithful to remember in prayer the victims and their families. My heart also goes out to all of the members of the crew who not only lost their esteemed shipmates, but also all of the personal belongings they had on board with them. The Naval community at Yokosuka has responded with great care in attempting to meet the physical, psychological, and spiritual needs of those who survived the collision. May Almighty God give them continued fortitude in the days ahead.
WASHINGTON. D.C. – A vocations video inviting young men to consider giving their lives to God as Catholic priests in the U.S. Military has been honored with two international media awards. The three-minute video, “Discern God’s Call,” was selected among thousands of entries to receive both a 2017 Telly Award and a 2017 Communicator Award of Excellence. SUPERIOR, WIS. – The Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS), is celebrating the priestly ordination of a prospective U.S. Navy chaplain this past weekend. Father Samuel Schneider, 26, was ordained a priest on Sunday, June 4, in Superior, Wis. Father Schneider hopes eventually to serve on active duty in the U.S. Navy with endorsement and faculties from the AMS.
ATLANTA, GA. – The Reverend Mr. Michael Metz, a candidate for the Catholic priesthood and United States military chaplaincy, was ordained a transitional deacon Saturday, May 27, in Atlanta, Ga. Deacon Metz is on track to be ordained a priest in June of 2018, and he hopes eventually to serve as a Catholic chaplain in the United States Army with endorsement and faculties from the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS).
WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today, the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS), launched a new podcast called Catholic Military Life. The podcast, featuring recorded audio conversations with chaplains and others involved with pastoral care to those who serve, will appear in regular episodes on the AMS website, its Facebook page, and external sites such as SoundCloud and PodOmatic.

The Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS), is offering, in collaboration with the University of Dayton’s Virtual Learning Community for Faith Formation (VLCFF), a FREE course called Missionary Disciples: Witnesses of God’s Love.
