QUEBEC, CANADA – The Catholic Press Association of the United States and Canada (CPA) honored SALUTE Magazine with two awards Friday night, June 23, 2017, at the organization’s annual awards banquet in Quebec City. SALUTE is the quarterly news magazine of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS). Funeral Arrangements Published for Father Martin Smith-Soucier, President of National Conference of VA Catholic Chaplains

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Father Martin Smith-Soucier, Chief Chaplain at Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center of Cincinnati, Ohio, and President of the National Conference of Veterans Affairs Catholic Chaplains (NCVACC), died June 19th at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati with his family and dear friends at his side. He was 69 years old. Father Smith-Soucier served as a priest for over 40 years.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – At 72, retired U.S. Navy Lieutenant John Odell runs three days a week, five to six miles at a stretch. “My doctor told me that running was better than any pill he could prescribe, so I figured running’s doing good for me,” the veteran naval cryptologic maintenance officer quipped. On Oct. 8, Mr. Odell, of Penrose, N.C., will run through the streets of the nation’s capital in the U.S. Army’s 33rd annual Army Ten-Miler. He will be on a charity team running to raise money for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS).

Archbishop Timothy Broglio Issues Statement on Ship Collision Involving USS Fitzgerald

“Deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life on the USS Fitzgerald, I ask all of the faithful to remember in prayer the victims and their families.  My heart also goes out to all of the members of the crew who not only lost their esteemed shipmates, but also all of the personal belongings they had on board with them.  The Naval community at Yokosuka has responded with great care in attempting to meet the physical, psychological, and spiritual needs of those who survived the collision.  May Almighty God give them continued fortitude in the days ahead.

Archdiocese to Hold First-Ever Military Young Adult Conference

NORTHBROOK, ILL. – The Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS), will hold its first-ever Military Young Adult Conference this weekend in Northbrook, Ill., just outside Chicago. The conference, called “Serving as a Missionary Disciple,” will bring members of the AMS Office of Evangelization together with active-duty Catholic ministry leaders based around the country, ages 18 to 35, and if married, their spouses, for a group encounter at the Techny Towers Conference and Retreat Center. Over the course of the June 16-18 gathering, participants will explore ways to enhance their faith journey and develop ministerial leadership skills that they can carry back to their home base Catholic communities and further build the body of Christ.

LAFAYETTE, LA. – The Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS), is celebrating the priestly ordination of a prospective U.S. Navy chaplain this past weekend.  Father Rene Pellessier, 27, was ordained a priest on Saturday, June 10, in Lafayette, La. Father Pellessier hopes eventually to serve on active duty in the U.S. Navy with endorsement and faculties from the AMS.

Archdiocesan Vocations Video Honored with Two International Media Awards

WASHINGTON. D.C. – A vocations video inviting young men to consider giving their lives to God as Catholic priests in the U.S. Military has been honored with two international media awards. The three-minute video, “Discern God’s Call,” was selected among thousands of entries to receive both a 2017 Telly Award and a 2017 Communicator Award of Excellence.
