Prospective Catholic U.S. Navy Chaplain Ordained Transitional Deacon in Arlington, VA

ARLINGTON, VA – The Reverend Mr. Sean Koehr, a candidate for Catholic priesthood and United States Military chaplaincy, was ordained a transitional deacon on Saturday, June 2, in Arlington, VA. Deacon Koehr, 28, is in priestly formation at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Wynnewood, PA, where he recently earned a Master of Divinity degree. He hopes eventually to serve as a Catholic chaplain in the U.S. Navy with endorsement and faculties from the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS) after three years of pastoral service in his home Diocese of Arlington.

Prospective New Catholic Army Chaplain Ordained a Priest

FORT WAYNE, IN – Father Jay Horning, a United States Army chaplain candidate, was ordained a priest on Saturday, June 2, in Fort Wayne, IN. His ordination was celebrated at an 11:00 a.m. Mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conceptionthrough the laying on of hands and the prayer of consecration invoking the Holy Spirit by Bishop Kevin C. Rhoades of Fort Wayne-South Bend. His Excellency, the Most Reverend Timothy P. Broglio, J.C.D., Archbishop for the Military Services, USA, concelebrated the Mass.

AMS Director of Faith Formation First-Ever Recipient of Newly-Created Wineskins Award from National Conference for Catechetical Leadership

CHICAGO – On Friday, June 1, Mr. José Amaya, Director of Faith Formation for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS) was honored to receive the newly-created Wineskins Award from the National Conference for Catechetical Leadership (NCCL). Mr. Amaya is the first-ever recipient of the Wineskins Award in the category of “Diocesan/Multi-Diocesan.” The NCCL established the award recently to: (1) highlight and celebrate extraordinary achievement occurring in a diocese (or diocesan clusters) in the ministries of evangelization and catechesis; (2) share successful initiatives that may benefit other dioceses; (3) encourage continued creative innovation in parish catechetical and evangelization efforts; and (4) reflect the spirit of the “new evangelization” promulgated by Saint Pope John Paul II and the General/National Directories for Catechesis.

Film on Vietnam War Hero Father Vincent R. Capodanno Named Winner of 2018 Gabriel Award

WASHINGTON, DC – The film Called and Chosen – Father Vincent R. Capodanno has been named winner of a 2018 Gabriel Award from the Catholic Press Association. The 90-minute film, which premiered on EWTN August 30, 2017, explores the life of the Maryknoll missionary-turned-military-chaplain who died a hero in combat during the Vietnam War. Father Capodanno was killed by enemy gunfire on Sept. 4, 1967, at the age of 38 in Vietnam’s Quế Sơn Valley, administering the sacraments to embattled U.S. Marines and pulling the wounded to safety. He posthumously received the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military decoration.  His Cause of Canonization has been opened by the Catholic Church.

Memorial Mass Draws 2,250 Faithful to the National Shrine

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Approximately 2,250 Catholics gathered in the Great Upper Church of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception on Pentecost Sunday for a 4:30 p.m. (EDST) Mass to honor the men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces, particularly those who paid the ultimate price for American liberty.The 24th Annual Memorial Mass of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS), which was attended by service members from all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces, opened with a posting of the colors and the singing of the National Anthem.

One-Hundred-Year-Old World War II Veteran Among Those to be Remembered at May 20 Memorial Mass

WASHINGTON, DC – Wednesday marked the 100th birthday of Mr. Fouad Simon John of Uniontown, PA, a Maronite Catholic who served as a U.S. Army medic in World War II from 1941 to 1945, and he is still around to celebrate with his family.
