Catholic U.S. Air Force Chaplain Candidate Ordained a Deacon in Rome

ROME – The Reverend Mr. Timothy G. Mergen, 2d Lt, USAFR, a candidate for the Catholic priesthood and United States Military chaplaincy, was ordained a transitional deacon on Thursday, Oct. 3, in Rome. He hopes eventually to serve as a Catholic chaplain in the United States Air Force with endorsement and faculties from the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS). He is tentatively scheduled to be ordained a priest next year in his home Diocese of Madison, WI.

Annual Pilgrimage for the Sea Services Planned for Oct. 6 at the National Shrine of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton

EMMITSBURG, MD – Come to the National Shrine of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton and pray for servicemen and women at the Annual Pilgrimage for the Sea Services on Sunday, Oct. 6, in Emmitsburg, MD. Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton is the Patroness of the Sea Services, which include the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Merchant Marine and Public Health Service. The late John Joseph Cardinal O’Connor advocated for her designation as the Patroness of the Sea Services in 1977 when he served as the U.S. Navy Chief of Chaplains. The 3:00 p.m. (EDST) Mass will be celebrated by the Most Reverend Michael C. Barber, SJ, Bishop of Oakland, CA, who also served for many years as a chaplain in the Naval Reserve.

Retired Auxiliary Bishop Francis X. Roque Passes to Eternal Life

PROVIDENCE, RI – The Most Reverend Francis X. Roque, D.D., CH (COL), USA (Ret.), ended his earthly pilgrimage on Thursday, September 12, 2019. He was 90. Bishop Roque, a 21-year-veteran of the U.S. Army chaplain corps, served as Auxiliary Bishop first in the Military Vicariate and then in the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS), under Archbishops Joseph T. Ryan, Joseph T. Dimino, and Edwin F. O’Brien from 1983 to 2004. Bishop Roque died peacefully, less than a month shy of his 91st birthday and just a few days before the 66th anniversary of his priestly ordination, at the Jeanne Jugan Residence in Pawtucket, RI, an assisted care home run by the Little Sisters of the Poor, where he had lived in quiet retirement for the past few years. He is survived by dozens of nieces and nephews.
