Archdiocese Holds First-Ever Virtual Advent Retreat for Catholic Faith Leaders on U.S. Military Installations Worldwide

WASHINGTON, DC — Advent, the four-week liturgical season before Christmas, is a time of waiting, conversion, and hopeful preparation as Catholics journey together toward celebration of the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. This year, Advent began on Nov. 28, and for the first time ever, the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS), held a Virtual Advent Retreat for those leading the journey on U.S. Military installations worldwide. On Dec. 1, more than 50 U.S. Military-affiliated catechists, coordinators of religious education (CREs), Catholic pastoral life coordinators, priests, and others based throughout the United States and in countries from Europe and the Middle East to Asia came together on Zoom for the 90-minute retreat focused on prayer and reflection in preparation for the Lord’s coming. The same retreat was conducted twice in one day—at 6:00 a.m. ET and again at 2:00 p.m. ET—giving participants in all time zones a convenient option.

Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio Consecrates and Blesses Sacramental Oils at Socially-Distanced Chrism Mass

WASHINGTON, D.C.— Sacred oils for sacramental and ecclesiastical use over the coming year on U.S. military sites worldwide and in the nation’s VA Medical Centers were blessed and consecrated Tuesday evening during a socially-distanced gathering at the annual Chrism Mass of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS). Attendance was limited to no more than 60 members of the public due to crowd size restrictions imposed by the District of Columbia during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. During the Mass, Catholic U.S. Military chaplains, priests in service to, and friends of the Archdiocese also renewed their ministerial commitment.

Former U.S. Air Force Chaplain’s Assistant Ordained Catholic Priest

SEASIDE, CA –Father Tyler R. Harris, 2d Lt, USAFR, a prospective United States Air Force chaplain, was ordained a Catholic priest on Saturday, August 22, in Seaside, CA. Father Harris, 40, plans eventually to serve on active duty as a chaplain in the U.S. Air Force with endorsement and faculties from the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS) after an initial three years of pastoral service in his home Diocese of Monterey.
