Korean War Hero Father Emil J. Kapaun Extolled for Life Lived in Imitation of Christ

ARLINGTON, Va.—Korean War hero and Catholic U.S. Army Chaplain Father Emil J. Kapaun performed courageous deeds worthy of the Medal of Honor because he “chose to live his life for others and not for himself” in imitation of Jesus Christ. That was the central message of a speech Thursday by the Reverend Monsignor John J.M. Foster, J.C.D., Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA, to dozens of Medal of Honor holders, their friends, relatives, and other VIPs at a luncheon sponsored by American Airlines’ military veterans initiatives program at the Ritz-Carlton in Pentagon City. Twenty-Nine Men Gather for Discernment Retreat on Possible Vocations as U.S. Military Chaplains

MENLO PARK, CALIFORNIA— Twenty-nine men from three service branches of the United States Armed Forces will gather here this weekend for a March 15-18 discernment retreat aimed at helping them determine if they are called by the Holy Spirit to be Catholic priests and military chaplains. The  Vocations Officeof the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS), is conducting the annual retreat at St. Patrick’s Seminary. The prospective chaplain candidates include two from the Army; six from the Navy; thirteen from the Air Force; and eight civilians.

Active-Duty Couples Invited to Register for First-Ever Catholic Marriage Enrichment Retreat

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS) is now taking registrations for its first-ever Catholic Marriage Enrichment Retreat. The retreat, for active duty couples who have been married at least two years, will be held Feb. 16-18, 2018, at the Bon Secours Retreat House in Marriottsville, Md., a 300-acre pastoral setting with abundant spaces for reflection, both indoors and outdoors.

World War Two Chaplain Hero Father Joseph Verbis Lafleur Receives Distinguished Service Cross and Purple Heart

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Father Joseph Verbis Lafleur, a Catholic U.S. Army Air Corps Chaplain in World War II, posthumously received the Distinguished Service Cross and the Purple Heart in a ceremony on Tuesday, Oct. 17, in Opelousas, LA. Congressman Ralph Abraham, M.D., (R-LA), presented the two military medals to Father Lefleur’s nephew and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Lefleur, at Saint Landry Catholic Church, where the priest celebrated his first Mass following ordination in 1938. The Most Reverend J. Douglas Deshotel, Bishop of Lafayette, LA, and Father James Brady, pastor of Saint Landry Parish, participated in the ceremony along with other dignitaries, devout Catholics, and students from Opelousas Catholic Junior High and High Schools.

Team AMS Crosses Finish Line in 33rd Annual Army Ten Miler with only $7,000 Left to Raise

WASHINGTON, D.C. – A charity team of 50 runners representing the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS) crossed the finish line in the 33rd annual Army Ten-Miler on Sunday, Oct. 8, 2017, just $7,208 short of its $60,000 fundraising goal. Consequently, the AMS has decided to extend the donation period for one more week in hopes reaching the target. Donors now have through Friday, Oct. 13, to make a gift.
