WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS), celebrated its 11th Annual Benefit on Saturday, November 23, at the Saint John Paul II National Shrine. The celebration broke all records for both the number of registered guests–more than 300–and the amount raised in support of pastoral care for those who serve, over $419,000.
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Supporters of the free exercise of Catholic faith in the U.S. Military will have an extraordinary opportunity next month to show their support. On Tuesday, Dec. 3, the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA, (AMS), will participate in #iGiveCatholic. Now in its fifth year, #iGiveCatholic is a 24-hour online giving event for the faithful in multiple archdioceses and dioceses worldwide to unite and raise as many charitable dollars as possible in a single day. #iGiveCatholic presents an opportunity for Catholics to donate and support the organizations that enrich our souls on #GivingTuesday.
NEW YORK, NY – Castletown Media has partnered with the Interfaith Broadcasting Commission to release the feature length documentary, The Field Afar, about Servant of God, Father Vincent Capodanno, MM, to select ABC-TV affiliates throughout the United States. Stations are airing the film on their own local schedules between November 17th through January, 2020.

On Sunday, Nov. 3, His Excellency, the Most Reverend Timothy P. Broglio, J.C.D., Archbishop for the Military Services, USA, visited Air Base 101 in Niamey, Niger. Archbishop Broglio traveled first to Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, and then to Niamey in support of Catholic Relief Services (CRS), the international charity of the Catholic Church in the United States whose Board of Trustees has many bishops from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). In Niger, CRS is funding local children’s education, hygiene programs, and refugees arriving from Libya or internally displaced.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – American Catholics will have a rare opportunity early next month to offer charitable support for pastoral care to the faithful in the United States Military and the nation’s Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Centers. A special second collection will be taken up in parishes nationwide for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS). This special collection for the AMS is taken only once every three years with the approval of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). Most parishes will take up the Triennial National Collection at Sunday Masses the weekend of Nov. 9-10, or as otherwise determined by an individual diocese or parish. Military Catholics who attend Mass at nondenominational base chapels where no second collections are taken may nevertheless give the same weekend through the AMS Appeal.

WASHINGTON, DC –Vice Admiral P. Stephen Stanley, USN (Ret.), has been appointed Chairman of the governing board of the Father Vincent Capodanno Guild. The Guild is a private Catholic Church association and not-for-profit corporation established in 2013 to promote the Cause for Canonization of Father Vincent R. Capodanno, MM, Servant of God. Father Capodanno, a U.S. Navy chaplain lieutenant, was killed in action during the Vietnam War while anointing and aiding U.S. Marines in combat against the North Vietnamese army. The Maryknoll priest from Staten Island, NY, posthumously received the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military decoration. The Holy See’s Congregation for the Causes of Saints is now considering his Cause. Should the Congregation deem Father Capodanno’s Cause worthy to proceed with canonization, he will next be beatified and then declared a saint.
ROME – The Reverend Mr. Timothy G. Mergen, 2d Lt, USAFR, a candidate for the Catholic priesthood and United States Military chaplaincy, was ordained a transitional deacon on Thursday, Oct. 3, in Rome. He hopes eventually to serve as a Catholic chaplain in the United States Air Force with endorsement and faculties from the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS). He is tentatively scheduled to be ordained a priest next year in his home Diocese of Madison, WI.
EMMITSBURG, MD – Come to the National Shrine of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton and pray for servicemen and women at the Annual Pilgrimage for the Sea Services on Sunday, Oct. 6, in Emmitsburg, MD. Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton is the Patroness of the Sea Services, which include the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Merchant Marine and Public Health Service. The late John Joseph Cardinal O’Connor advocated for her designation as the Patroness of the Sea Services in 1977 when he served as the U.S. Navy Chief of Chaplains. The 3:00 p.m. (EDST) Mass will be celebrated by the Most Reverend Michael C. Barber, SJ, Bishop of Oakland, CA, who also served for many years as a chaplain in the Naval Reserve.
