Final Tally: U.S. Military Catholics Donate $118,380 to Hurricane Relief

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Catholics in the United States Military over the past few months have donated a total of $118,380.03 in relief to victims of Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria. Catholic military chaplains, serving with endorsement and faculties from the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS), took up the donations at military installations worldwide, in general by means of a designated offering at the Sunday Mass.

Catholic Priests to Gather in Washington to Discern Possible “Vocation Within a Vocation” as U.S. Military Chaplains

WASHINGTON, D.C. – More than a half-dozen Catholic priests from around the nation will gather in Washington, D.C., in June for a five-day discernment retreataimed at helping them determine if they are called to the “vocation within a vocation” to serve as U.S. Military chaplains. The all-expenses-paid retreat, “For God and Country: a Call to Serve Those Who Serve,” is the fourth of its kind to be sponsored by the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS), since 2015.

The Mass will be celebrated at 4:30 p.m. (EDST) on Sunday, May 20, 2018, in the Great Upper Church of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, 400 Michigan Avenue, Northeast in Washington, D.C.

South Korea-Based Catholic U.S. Military Couples and Families Gather for Reflection on Faith

SEOUL, South Korea – Catholic married couples and families in service to the U.S. Military in South Korea are taking a deeper look at their faith lives this week in two separate gatherings organized with the support and cooperation of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS). On Wednesday night, April 4, Dr. Mark Moitoza, AMS Vice-Chancellor of Evangelization, facilitated a marriage enrichment session for couples at the United States Army Garrison (USAG) Yongsan Memorial Chapel in Seoul. Meanwhile, nearly 30 miles southeast of that location, a Catholic Family Retreat will be held this weekend at the Yongmun Youth Camp.

Auxiliary Bishop F. Richard Spencer Honored with Outstanding Eagle Scout Award

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The National Eagle Scout Association on Wednesday presented Auxiliary Bishop F. Richard Spencer with its prestigious Outstanding Eagle Scout Award. The award honors Eagle Scouts who have achieved extraordinary success in professional and civic life, and serve as “Scouting’s finest examples of good men.” Bishop Spencer was one of fifteen men who received the award during an evening ceremony in Washington, D.C. Their ranks included five retired flag officers, three CEOs, medical doctors including a specialist in traumatic brain injury, lawyers, and a prominent judge.

Twenty-Nine Men Gather for Discernment Retreat on Possible Vocations as U.S. Military Chaplains

MENLO PARK, CALIFORNIA— Twenty-nine men from three service branches of the United States Armed Forces will gather here this weekend for a March 15-18 discernment retreat aimed at helping them determine if they are called by the Holy Spirit to be Catholic priests and military chaplains. The Vocations Officeof the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS), is conducting the annual retreat at St. Patrick’s Seminary. The prospective chaplain candidates include two from the Army; six from the Navy; thirteen from the Air Force; and eight civilians.

Auxiliary Bishop Richard B. Higgins Celebrates 50 Years as a Catholic Priest

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today, the Most Rev. Richard B. Higgins celebrates the golden anniversary of his priestly ordination. Auxiliary Bishop Higgins, 74, was ordained a priest on March 9, 1968, in the Basilica of St. John Lateran in Rome. He currently serves His Excellency, the Most Reverend Timothy P. Broglio, J.C.D., Archbishop for the Military Services, USA, as Episcopal Vicar for Veterans Affairs. In that role, Bishop Higgins is responsible for more than 210 Catholic chaplains in 153 VA Medical Centers throughout the United States, Puerto Rico and Guam. Bishop Higgins also serves as the Bishop Protector for the eight-thousand members of the Catholic War Veterans of America and currently assists Archbishop Broglio in serving the installations in the Eastern Vicariate of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS).

Archbishop Timothy Broglio Expresses Gratitude for Auxiliary Bishop Robert J. Coyle’s “Selfless Ministry”

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today, His Excellency, the Most Reverend Timothy P. Broglio, J.C.D., Archbishop for the Military Services, USA, issued the following statement after the Holy See announced the transfer of Auxiliary Bishop Robert J. Coyle to Bishop Coyle’s home diocese of Rockville Centre, N.Y.: “I am deeply grateful to Bishop Coyle for the selfless ministry that has been his since I ordained him to the episcopacy on 25 April 2013. At great personal sacrifice, he lived far from his parents and familiar surroundings on Long Island and tirelessly took up the pilgrim’s staff to minister to the men and women in uniform and their families. I know that he will offer the same generous service to Bishop John Barres and to the faithful of his native Rockville Centre. He returns to them enriched by his ministry to a flock stationed in half of the continental United States. He will continue to be in my prayers and I am counting on his for the noble people who make up this archdiocese.”

Archbishop Broglio Invites Faithful to Imitate Example of “Selfless and Abundant Love” Demonstrated by the Heroic “Four Chaplains”

KEARNY, N.J.—His Excellency, the Most Reverend Timothy P. Broglio, J.C.D., Archbishop for the Military Services, USA, invited the faithful to imitate the example of “selfless service and abundant love” demonstrated by the “Four Chaplains” killed aboard the U.S. Army transport ship USAT Dorchester in World War Two. Archbishop Broglio preached the homily at a Mass in Kearny, N.J., on Super Bowl Sunday, commemorating the 75th anniversary of their heroic deaths when they gave up their life jackets to others aboard after the ship was struck by German torpedoes. Father Lt. John P. Washington, a Catholic priest, Rabbi Lt. Alexander D. Goode, a Jewish rabbi, Rev. Lt. Clark V. Poling, a Dutch Reformed minister, and Rev. Lt. George L. Fox, a Methodist minister, all went down with the ship, prayerfully locked arm in arm, leaving more than 200 survivors to reach safety in the frigid waters of the North Atlantic.

Archbishop Broglio to Preach Homily on 75th Anniversary of Ultimate Sacrifice Paid by the Heroic “Four Chaplains”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – His Excellency, the Most Reverend Timothy P. Broglio, J.C.D., Archbishop for the Military Services, USA, will be the principal celebrant and homilist at a Mass this weekend to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the heroic deaths of the “Four Chaplains” killed aboard the U.S. Army transport ship USAT Dorchester in the North Atlantic Ocean during World War Two. The Mass will be celebrated at noon (EST) on Feb. 4 at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church, 676 Kearny Avenue, in Kearny, New Jersey, where one of the chaplains, Father John P. Washington, served from 1937 to 1942.
