AMS Director of Faith Formation First-Ever Recipient of Newly-Created Wineskins Award from National Conference for Catechetical Leadership

CHICAGO – On Friday, June 1, Mr. José Amaya, Director of Faith Formation for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS) was honored to receive the newly-created Wineskins Award from the National Conference for Catechetical Leadership (NCCL). Mr. Amaya is the first-ever recipient of the Wineskins Award in the category of “Diocesan/Multi-Diocesan.” The NCCL established the award recently to: (1) highlight and celebrate extraordinary achievement occurring in a diocese (or diocesan clusters) in the ministries of evangelization and catechesis; (2) share successful initiatives that may benefit other dioceses; (3) encourage continued creative innovation in parish catechetical and evangelization efforts; and (4) reflect the spirit of the “new evangelization” promulgated by Saint Pope John Paul II and the General/National Directories for Catechesis.

Memorial Mass Draws 2,250 Faithful to the National Shrine

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Approximately 2,250 Catholics gathered in the Great Upper Church of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception on Pentecost Sunday for a 4:30 p.m. (EDST) Mass to honor the men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces, particularly those who paid the ultimate price for American liberty.The 24th Annual Memorial Mass of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS), which was attended by service members from all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces, opened with a posting of the colors and the singing of the National Anthem.

One-Hundred-Year-Old World War II Veteran Among Those to be Remembered at May 20 Memorial Mass

WASHINGTON, DC – Wednesday marked the 100th birthday of Mr. Fouad Simon John of Uniontown, PA, a Maronite Catholic who served as a U.S. Army medic in World War II from 1941 to 1945, and he is still around to celebrate with his family. It is precisely for Mr. John and all others who have served our nation in uniform, living and deceased, that the 24th annual Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Pentecost Sunday, May 20, in the Great Upper Church of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, 400 Michigan Avenue Northeast in Washington, D.C. Texas Women’s Project Donates $80,000 to Co-Sponsored Seminarian Program

HOUSTON, Texas – For the past two years, under the banner of the Texas Women’s Project, wives of the Texas State Council of the Knights of Columbus(K of C) have been raising money to support Catholic seminarians in formation to become priests and U.S. Military chaplains. His Excellency, the Most Reverend Timothy P. Broglio, J.C.D., Archbishop for the Military Services, USA, accepted a check for $75,000 Saturday night at the council’s 114th Annual State Convention banquet in Houston. Presenting the check was Ms. Jo-Dee Benson, wife of Knights of Columbus Texas State Deputy Douglas E. Oldmixon. Meanwhile, the Texas wives raised an additional $5,000 over the weekend, bringing their total contribution to $80,000.

Final Tally: U.S. Military Catholics Donate $118,380 to Hurricane Relief

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Catholics in the United States Military over the past few months have donated a total of $118,380.03 in relief to victims of Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria. Catholic military chaplains, serving with endorsement and faculties from the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS), took up the donations at military installations worldwide, in general by means of a designated offering at the Sunday Mass.

Korean War Hero Father Emil J. Kapaun Extolled for Life Lived in Imitation of Christ

ARLINGTON, Va.—Korean War hero and Catholic U.S. Army Chaplain Father Emil J. Kapaun performed courageous deeds worthy of the Medal of Honor because he “chose to live his life for others and not for himself” in imitation of Jesus Christ. That was the central message of a speech Thursday by the Reverend Monsignor John J.M. Foster, J.C.D., Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA, to dozens of Medal of Honor holders, their friends, relatives, and other VIPs at a luncheon sponsored by American Airlines’ military veterans initiatives program at the Ritz-Carlton in Pentagon City. The luncheon was timed to coincide with National Medal of Honor Day.

Twenty-Nine Men Gather for Discernment Retreat on Possible Vocations as U.S. Military Chaplains

MENLO PARK, CALIFORNIA— Twenty-nine men from three service branches of the United States Armed Forces will gather here this weekend for a March 15-18 discernment retreat aimed at helping them determine if they are called by the Holy Spirit to be Catholic priests and military chaplains. The  Vocations Officeof the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS), is conducting the annual retreat at St. Patrick’s Seminary. The prospective chaplain candidates include two from the Army; six from the Navy; thirteen from the Air Force; and eight civilians.

Active-Duty Couples Invited to Register for First-Ever Catholic Marriage Enrichment Retreat

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS) is now taking registrations for its first-ever Catholic Marriage Enrichment Retreat. The retreat, for active duty couples who have been married at least two years, will be held Feb. 16-18, 2018, at the Bon Secours Retreat House in Marriottsville, Md., a 300-acre pastoral setting with abundant spaces for reflection, both indoors and outdoors.
